Chancellor Adolfo S. Azcuna delivered the second roll-out lecture entitled Updates on International Humanitarian Law (IHL): A Field Guide to the Basics for the PHILJA Academic Excellence Lecture Series in the Judiciary, in partnership with the Metrobank Foundation, Inc. (MBFI), held on August 8, 2012, at the Ateneo de Davao University. Judges, clerks of court, legal researchers and lawyers from Davao City and neighboring towns; faculty and students of the Ateneo de Davao University College of Law; and guests from the MBFI field offices in the Davao area composed the 318 attendees.

The principles of complimentarity and superior liability as well as sovereign immunity in relation to IHL were highlighted in Justice Azcuna’s lecture. An open forum followed, giving the attendees an opportunity to pose their questions and seek clarifications relative to IHL.

In 2011, the MBFI proposed the roll-out to the public of the lectures delivered by recipients of the Metrobank Foundation Professorial Chair Award, which was established in 2004 in support of PHILJA’s objective to encourage research among its faculty and the Judiciary, and to upgrade the academic content of its courses. The roll-out program aims to maximize its reach and benefit more people, as the depth of the learnings on the researches also concern the general public. The first roll-out lecture, now named the "Academic Excellence Lecture Series in the Judiciary," was delivered by retired Justice Dante O. Tinga in November 2011. There are nine professorial chair holders to date.
