PHILJA Vists IRRI
Upon invitation from the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), a delegation of PHILJA officials and employees participated in a study tour of the Institute in Los Baños, Laguna on February 7, 2014 headed by its very own Chancellor, Justice Adolfo S. Azcuna.
Upon arrival, the delegates were welcomed by Director General Robert S. Zeigler and Deputy Director General V. Bruce J. Tolentino. A briefing by some of the Institute’s officials on the scope of their work, rice breeding and rice biotechnology was given.Hand-outs and publications were also provided by the Institute complementing the discussions. Afterwards, the delegates were scheduled to tour the ricefields featuring the different rice varieties and the Institute’s units and facilities such as the Genetic Transformation Laboratory, Seed Health Unit, International Rice Genebank, and the Grain Quality and Nutrition Center. The study tour was capped by an open forum that served as venue for delegates to air their questions and concerns as well as for Justice Azcuna, in behalf of PHILJA and the delegation, to compliment the remarkable work of IRRI and the hospitality and graciousness of their officials and employees.
